Its snap layouts let you immediately snap a window to a quadrant or third of the screen by just hovering over the preferred layout. Windows has always had excellent window management, but Windows 11 takes things further. Microsoft’s refined key window and display management features

Similarly, Microsoft has pushed firmware improvements to optimize SSD speeds, fast startup from sleep, and processor resource distribution so your PC runs more efficiently. This boosts graphics performance, especially for games, and it’s carried over from Microsoft’s advancements on the Xbox Series X console. With DirectStorage, Windows 11 can load graphics data directly from storage to the graphics processor without routing through the central processor. If you’re a gamer, Windows 11 offers some key improvements over Windows 10.

While Windows 10 is perfectly usable on touch devices, Windows 11’s design is more intuitive.

Switching between vertical and horizontal mode is a smooth process, icons are large enough to click easily, and Windows 11 Ink support works seamlessly. On the other hand, Windows 11 is much more user-friendly for Windows tablets and touch-based devices. Windows 10 will be officially supported until 2025. However, laptops with the ARM-version of Windows are slowly starting to come to market, which is excellent news for ARM-based systems with a TPM module (in other words: still not Apple PCs), but they are nowhere near as widespread as their Mac counterparts. Meanwhile, Windows 10 isn’t usable on the newer Macs running Apple Silicon processors Windows 10 and 11 require x86 processors to run, meaning an Intel or AMD chip. Apple’s PCs do not have TPM modules, so Windows users have to emulate the module to get Windows 11 to work. If you’re an Apple PC user, switching from Windows 10 to 11 could prove tricky. Most laptops and desktops built in the last five years have one, but you should verify your PC’s specs are supported on Microsoft’s support page. Focused Sessions reduces the noise of those alerts, but it also disables Task Bar badges and lets you time work sprints with the clock app.Intel's and AMD's x86 processors can run both Windows 10 and Windows 11.Ĭurrently, Microsoft requires Windows 11 machines to have a TPM 2.0 module, which provides hardware-based security features that older PCs may not have. She noticed how notifications were giving her more anxiety and disrupting her workflow, so she helped to create a way to minimize them without disabling notifications entirely. The new Focus Sessions experience, for example, is spearheaded by Alexis Kane, a product manager who has ADHD.

More so than most tech companies, Microsoft has been pushing to make its hardware and software more accessible over the last decade. Those include a slew of accessibility upgrades that Microsoft unveiled earlier this year: system-wide live captions, which will initially appear at the top of your screen to help you feel engaged during video chats natural sounding voices for the Narrator screen reader as well as a preview of improved voice commands for using your PC and transcription. Much like the improved Windows Update experience, the vast majority of new features in the 2022 update are under the hood. (Check out our Windows 11 review for more details on upgrading from Windows 10.) This advice applies to both Windows 11 and Windows 10 users, though the latter should double-check their computer with the PC Health Check app to ensure their hardware is compatible.

The company will also highlight potential conflicts on your system - e.g., an incompatible app, an out of date driver - that will prevent you from getting the refreshed OS. As usual, Microsoft says it's taking a "measured and phased" approach, which means there's a chance you won't see the update immediately.

No surprise here: Head over to Windows Update in your Settings app and see if your computer is eligible for an upgrade. Mostly, though, it'll make it easier for you to get future updates more quickly. Today, Microsoft will start rolling out the Windupdate, the operating system's first major revision, which brings better security, accessibility and a handful of gaming improvements. My opinion hasn't changed much since then (and yes, I'm still frustrated by the cleaner but less usable taskbar). But, as I noted in my review, Windows 11 ended up refining Microsoft's desktop formula fairly well. Can you believe it's been almost a year since Windows 11 launched? Back then, I was surprised that Microsoft was practically rushing a new version of Windows out the door.
